SIGIRIYA

Sigiriya


Sigiriya is a one of the famous and most attractive place in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya means lion’s rock.Sigiriya is situated in Dambulla in the District of Matale. People go to Sigirya everyday to climb this huge rock. This rock is very steep. It is about 600 feet high.

Sigiriya  is a unique place and it is famous for mirror wall and frescoes. The frescoes are pictures of women and nobody knows who did these nice paintings. Since from the ancient time visitors have scribbled verses on the mirror wall. It is said that most of these verses are about frescoes. The most ancient inscriptions are dated from the 8th century.On the top of the mountain there is a foot print. Buddhists believe it is the foot print of Lord Buddha.

Lower Sigiriya , was part of a sprawling garden complex adorned by large lotus pools. The surrounding territories of Sigiriya were inhibited for several thousand years.Sigiriya was a fortress of King Kashyapa.

There is a wonderful staircase leading to it, through the mouth of a big lion. This lion is carved out of stone. So it's called Singhagiri. Sigiriya provides evident for the great technologies in ancient Sri Lanka.King Kashyapa made this to protect himself against his enemies. King Kashyapa ruled Anuradhapura from this fortress for 18 years. Several ponds are located in the top of the Sigiriya.

It has a huge tourist attraction It attracts thousands of visitors each year.It is considered as one of the most beautiful sights in the word/ Sri Lanka.For many years it was not recognized as an important place but after Prince Charles visited recently many people began to go there.It is a colossal structure built around 1850. Though the building cannot be used any more, it has a historic value.So that, we should preserve this place for the future generation

Now-a-days Sigiriya is a very famous place worldwide. It has become one of the wonders of the world.
